How Much Water Should You Drink After a Massage?

After a relaxing massage, your therapist may offer you a glass of water.

But how much water should you drink after a massage? Do you need several bottles to “flush out toxins”?

The simple answer is no. There is no special amount of water everyone must drink after a massage.

How Much Water After a Massage Is Enough?

For most healthy adults, enjoying one regular glass of water after a massage is a comfortable start. After that, continue drinking normally throughout the day.

You may need more fluids if you:

  • Walked around Waikiki in the sun

  • Exercised or sweated before your appointment

  • Just finished a long flight

  • Already feel thirsty or dehydrated

  • Drank alcohol earlier in the day

Your needs depend on the weather, your activity level, your health, and how much fluid you have already had.

Does Water After a Massage Remove Toxins?

Massage does not release toxins that must be washed out by drinking large amounts of water. That common claim is not supported by good scientific evidence.

Water is still important for normal hydration, especially in Hawaii’s warm weather. However, forcing yourself to drink several bottles at once is unnecessary and may make you feel uncomfortable.

Drink gradually and pay attention to your body. Light-yellow urine usually suggests that you are reasonably hydrated, although foods, vitamins, and medications can affect urine color.

Relax and Rehydrate

After your massage, take a few quiet minutes before returning to your day.

Enjoy some water. Move slowly. Notice how your body feels.

If you have kidney, heart, or another medical condition that affects how much fluid you should drink, follow your healthcare provider’s advice.
